TIP 10

Join a gym with group classes and go to those you enjoy. It is more sociable than exercising alone on gym equipment. You’ll get to know the regular attendees and improve your physical and mental health through getting fitter – two for the “price” of one. (See Step 1: Move.)

TIP 11

Dance. It is thought that dance originated as a form of “social glue” and it has been practised by every culture throughout human history. It is a great way to connect with others (often literally!) and make friends. Touch is the ultimate connection between two people, and partner dancing, or any dance that involves some physical connection, is beneficial to physical and mental health. People normally swap partners during classes or social dances, so you can go alone, although dancing with total strangers does take a little getting used to. There are classes for total beginners of all ages, and even some dance companies that give older people the opportunity to perform. Find details online by style of dance or location. You will feel more joyful after dancing in a group and that in itself will make it easier to connect with others. (See My Story, page 13 and Step 1: Move.)

We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900, philosopher)
